“High Desert Fires” by High Desert Fires (Premiere)

RH_HDF_6561_FINALWhich came first: the song or the moniker? We may never know, but “High Desert Fires” is a majestic, anthemic single which splendidly captures the sweeping, vintage “California sound” that High Desert Fires evokes oh-so-well. Led by Chris Traynor (formerly of Helmet, Orange 9mm, Rival Schools and Bush), the Topanga Canyon-based music collective (or “chosen family”) all lived in the same house and communed daily until they produced their debut EP Light Is The Revelation (dropping August 21st via Grandfathers Tales). And of course in order to keep that authentic throwback vibe, the songs were recorded in mono and mixed to analog tape.

“Waking up the great white light inside of me.”

"Downside" Music Video by Jeffertitti's Nile

mic1Jeffertitti’s Nile‘s biography claims that the band has “taken on many formations, opening portals to infinite dimensions that rise & melt again, making space ways new sounds.” Keeping the trips true to psychedelia, the Topanga Canyon trio is as much as an art collective as a band –or refuses to see the difference. Their music will either groove or thump but always emitting from the core is a provocation to feel and experience the unknown. Director Johnny Maroney could not have created a more appropriately thematic music video for their new single “Downside”:

"South" by Boxviolet

The coed duo known as Boxviolet might be nomadic (Topanga Canyon to Brighton to Paris and back again) but their music maintains its moody grandeur like a reoccurring interpretive dream: sometimes epic, sometimes spooky, but always captivating. Best friends Margot Paige (vocals, guitar) and Luke Ehret (programming/guitar) are currently acting as “hermits” to work on their follow-up to 2010’s Audition EP with help from engineer John “Silas” Cranfield and mixer Mark Needham (The Killers). The leaked track “South” is classic Boxviolet: deep dark synths, crunching guitars, and Paige’s sexy hypnotic voice purring:

“I’d wish you kiss me on the mouth, or further south…”
