XYLØ (Interview)

Ever since they dropped their debut single “America,” Chase and Paige Duddy have reliably released a string of spellbinding trip-pop hits as XYLØ. We wanted to know more about the brother-sister duo so we interviewed them while photographer Mallory Turner shot some pics at The Fonda Theatre.

I’m sure you’re tired of answering this, but how do you properly pronounce XYLØ?

Paige: “Z-eye-low. Like ‘xylophone.'”

Is there a story behind the moniker?

Chase: “It was our grandfather’s license plate in the ’70s.”

Since you’re brother and sister, have you always collaborated together?

Paige: “Chase would ask me to sing on the odd project here and there when I was 13 to 17 years old but it wasn’t until I was 18 when he hired me to work on a Kendall and Kylie Jenner PacSun ad. We wrote it together –my first song I ever wrote– and it just clicked. He continued to hire me and we were like, ‘Damn. We need to start a band.'”

Is there a common theme or vibe that can be found in every XYLØ song?

Paige: “We’ll let the listener be the judge of that.”

What can you tell us about your highly anticipated forthcoming debut EP?

Chase: “The EP is called America. [It will be] released through Sony/Disruptor and there will be six songs. That’s all we can tell you…”

XYLØ will perform on January 23rd at Velvet Jones.
