“Some Families” Music Video by Morello (Premiere)

malMass4_photo by_Jessica DaschnerWhen Malcolm “Sir Mal” Cross isn’t performing with Pete Yorn or The Olms, he becomes Morello: an old-school funkster obsessed with singing soul about “modern life and modern love.” The Little Osaka denizen recruited Tokyo scenester Masaru Mitsu to collaborate on his latest album, The Duellists, which he considers his first “hi-fi project” with production credits from John Would (Fiona Apple) and R. Walt Vincent (Tortoise). Here’s its upbeat indie rock single, “Some Families,” which highlights the duo’s love for “obscure guitar bands and ’80s synthpop.”

“I wasn’t talking to you.”

And here’s its apt music video (directed by Alessandra Pasquino at Broken Rabbit Studios in DTLA) focusing on an artist as she works on a large painting while being troubled by sporadic flashbacks.
