Soko is a lot of things (singer, songwriter, actress, lesbian, vegan), but forget about the labels and focus on what she really is: talented. The French chanteuse says she’s a “gypsy couch-surfer” but managed to call Echo Park home for a while. Her debut album, I Thought I Was An Alien, is due stateside on June 11th via Alex Ebert’s (frontman for Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros) local label Community Music.
She might describe her music as “punk secrets” but really it’s dream pop dripping with romance that’s delivered by sexy beats (“I Just Want To Make It New With You”), folk ballads (“No More Home, No More Love”), or enveloping orchestrations like the single “We Might Be Dead By Tomorrow.” The latter’s music video was directed by Soko herself and shot on Super 8 like a vintage home movie. In-between montages of tombstones, we see Soko sensually engaging and playing with Meghan Edwards (Miss M.E). This is love at its zenith. Carpe diem.
Soko will perform this Saturday, June 1st at Make Music Pasadena.
And on Friday, June 7th at Jubilee.
